Cardinals edge Bears in the snow, 13-10

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y.—Plattsburgh State (1-5, 1-5 SUNYAC East) pulled away from the SUNY Potsdam women's lacrosse team (3-7, 0-6) late for a 13-10 win on a snowy afternoon. Sophomore attack Hannah Stevenson (Canton, N.Y./Hugh C. Williams) scored a career-high five goals for the Bears. Freshman midfielder Lindsey LaDue (Massena, N.Y./Massena) and sophomore attack Anita Reitano (Averill Park, N.Y./Averill Park) each had a goal and an assist.
 
The Cardinals opened the contest with goals from Katie Kallamni and Caroline Nola for a 2-0 lead at 24:45. Stevenson scored Potsdam's first with a free-position tally at 17:35. After Emily Caolii put Plattsburgh up 3-1 at 16:11, the Bears scored three in-a-row in six minutes. Graduate attack Alli Stark (Walworth, N.Y./Gananda) scored a man-up goal with an assist from LaDue at 15:12. Stevenson scored the next two at 12:48 and 9:12 to take a 4-3 lead. The Cardinals jumped back in front at 7:24 after goals from Frankie Pocaro and Lindsey Guzzetta. Stevenson netted her fourth at 2:11 to send the teams into the break tied at five.
 
The second half started with alternating runs. Nikki Scioscia, Allie Vangas and Guzzetta scored in succession to give Plattsburgh an 8-5 advantage. Potsdam answered with four. Stevenson scored her fifth at 21:04. At 18:33, junior attack Macy Reid (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) struck with an assist from Reitano. Senior midfielder Keira Thacker (Oakville, Ontario/T.A. Blakelock) tied the game with a free-position shot and Reitano gave Potsdam a brief lead with another eight-meter attempt at 14:08. Plattsburgh made a final push beginning with a goal from Emma McLaughlin at 12:11. Vangas and Porcaro followed with markers and the Cardinals were back up 11-9 at 9:32. Vangas put Plattsburgh up by three with a man-up goal at 8:21. LaDue got Potsdam back within 12-10 at the 2:00 mark, but Porcaro closed out the scoring at 1:17.
 
Bears sophomore goalie Netta Terrance (Akwesasne, N.Y./Salmon River) made 12 saves in 58:14, while senior Natalie Wasielewski (Carnegie, Pa./Chartiers Valley) made a save in her 1:46. Johanna Malone made six saves for the victory.
 
Senior defender Gabby Hobika (New Hartford, N.Y./New Hartford, N.Y.) collected five ground balls and caused three turnovers. Junior midfielder Calena Rodriguez (Albany, N.Y./Albany) totaled four draw controls and three caused turnovers.
 
The two teams go back at again tomorrow when Plattsburgh invades Maxcy Turf Field at 4 p.m.
