Cardinals overpower Bears in SUNYAC contest

POTSDAM, N.Y.—Plattsburgh State (2-5, 2-5 SUNYAC East) pulled away in the second half to defeat the SUNY Potsdam women's lacrosse team (3-8, 0-7) 17-10 on a cold and windy Thursday afternoon. Sophomore attack Anita Reitano (Averill Park, N.Y./Averill Park) led the Bears with three goals and an assist. Graduate attack Alli Stark (Walworth, N.Y./Gananda) had a goal and two assists and junior attack Macy Reid (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) added two goals.
 
The contest started similarly to yesterday's between the two teams. Junior attack Emily Caoili (Lagrangeville, N.Y./Arlington) and sophomore midfielder Lindsey Guzzetta (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) gave the Cardinals a 2-0 lead at 22:22. Sophomore attack Julia Blair (Massena, N.Y./Massena) found Stark in front of the net to get Potsdam on the board just 48 seconds later. Reitano then tied the game at 20:49 with a free-position goal. Plattsburgh regained the lead permanently with a 5-0 run started by senior midfielder Frankie Porcaro (Bellport, N.Y./Bellport) at 18:59. Junior attack Allie Vangas (Cornwall-on-Hudson, N.Y./Cornwall) scored the next two at 18:05 and 16:35, the second on an extra-man opportunity. Porcaro and Vangas then closed the run with the final two for a 7-2 Cardinal lead at 9:48. Potsdam got back within striking distance with the next three. Reitano set up freshman midfielder Lindsey LaDue (Massena, N.Y./Massena) at 7:20. Stark then set up senior midfielder Keira Thacker (Oakville, Ontario/T.A. Blakelock) and Reid to close the gap to 7-5 with 6:12 left in the half. Guzzetta netted her second at 4:41 and Plattsburgh led 8-5 at the break.
 
Vangas score the first two of the second half. The first coming a man down at 29:15 and the second in a man-up situation at 27:55. Freshman midfielder Novaleigh LeGrow (Massena, N.Y./Massena) scored Potsdam's sixth goal at 22:24, but the Cardinals seized control with a 3-0 run. Vangas, Guzzetta and sophomore midfielder Caroline Noia (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) scored in succession to extend the Plattsburgh advantage to 13-6 with 14:15 remaining. Reid buried her second at 13:30, but Pocaro and sophomore midfielder Emma McLaughlin (Northport, N.Y./Northport) answered for a 15-7 lead. The Bears scored three of the final five goals. Junior midfielder Calena Rodriguez (Albany, N.Y./Albany) and Reitano and scored two man-up goals in-a-row and Reitano scored the game's final tally as time expired. Porcaro and Vangas accounted for the last two Cardinal goals.
 
Sophomore goalie Netta Terrance (Akwesasne, N.Y./Salmon River) finished with nine saves. Plattsburgh junior goalie Alexa Cassidy (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley) stopped 10 shots for the win.
 
LeGrow had a strong performance for the Bears in addition to her goal, collecting seven ground balls, six draw controls and causing seven turnovers. Sophomore attack Hannah Stevenson (Canton, N.Y./Hugh C. Williams) had five ground balls and three caused turnovers. Rodriguez finished with six draw controls and LaDue caused four turnovers.
 
The Bears close out the season on Saturday when they host Oneonta State at 1 p.m.
