Mossey scores in OT to give Bears win at Alfred State

ALFRED, N.Y.—Freshman forward Justin Mossey (Amity Harbor, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) scored in the 96th minute to give the SUNY Potsdam men's soccer team (1-1-2) a 1-0 win over Alfred State (1-3) on Saturday afternoon. Freshman midfielder Zach Saddlemire (Gansevoort, N.Y./Schuylerville) assisted on the goal and senior goalie Conor Callan (Piermont, N.Y./Tappan Zee) made two saves for his second career shutout.

The Bears controlled the play in the first half. They outshot the Pioneers 8-2, but Alfred State goalie Thad Grierson made five saves to keep the contest scoreless. Callan only faced one shot on goal and handled it.

It was more of the same in the second half, with Potsdam outshooting the Pioneers 7-3. Grierson made two more saves as regulation ticked away and Callan didn't face a shot.

Callan made another save in overtime on Alfred State's only opportunity in the extra session. At 95:38, the Pioneers committed a foul. Saddlemire sent a high kick across the field to the left side of the box. The ball dropped into a mix of players and Mossey buried it for Potsdam's first win.

Grierson made eight saves on the afternoon. The Bears outshot Alfred State 16-6 and had a 10-3 advantage on corner kicks.

Potsdam is back in action on Wednesday when the Bears host crosstown rival Clarkson at 7 p.m.
