Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Morrissey goal gives Bears victory over Roger Williams and NEC Tournament title

HENNIKER, N.H.—Senior defender Maeve Morrissey (Averill Park, N.Y./Averill Park) scored in the 82nd minute to lift the SUNY Potsdam women's soccer team (4-1) to a 1-0 win over Roger Williams University (4-1) on Saturday afternoon. The Bears overcame an injury-riddled roster to gut out the victory. The win also gives the Bears their third New England College Tournament title in four tries. Potsdam sophomore goalie Chloe Gordon (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) made seven saves for her first career win and shutout.

The Hawks outshot Potsdam 8-5 in the first half. Gordon only needed one save to keep Roger Williams off the board in the opening period. Potsdam tested Hawks goalie Morgan Strassburg twice.

The Hawks were able to generate more pressure through much of the second half. As a result, the Bears weren't able to create another scoring chance until the 80th minute. However, they managed three in a two-minute span and made the most of them. At 81:38, Morrissey netted her third goal of the season and it proved to be decisive. Gordon made six saves in the second half to slam the door.

Strassburg finished with three saves. Potsdam is now 2-1 all-time against Roger Williams with the two victories coming over Hawks teams coached by former Bears Coach Tim Moody.

The all-tournament team will be announced later.

The Bears are back in action on Tuesday when they head to Utica College for a 6 p.m. contest with the Pioneers.
