POTSDAM, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam men's soccer team (0-1-1) grabbed a 1-0 lead 2:51 into the contest, but Utica College (2-0) rallied for a 2-1 win in overtime. Senior midfielder
Sebastian Matos (Huntington, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East) scored for Potsdam.
The Bears earned a kick just outside the penalty area just under three minutes into the contest. Freshman midfielder
Zach Saddlemire (Gansevoort, N.Y./Schuylerville) slipped the ball through a wall of players and Matos drove it home for his first career goal and a 1-0 lead. Potsdam held the edge in play in the first half, not allowing a shot, but wasn't able to add to its advantage.
The Pioneers entered the second half with more energy and finally cracked the Bears defense. At 55:43, Utica sophomore forward Sony Konate (Harlem, N.Y./Forsyth Sattellite Academy) buried a feed from sophomore midfielder Brady Barnard (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) to tie the score. The teams traded shots, but not dangerous scoring chances ,the rest of the way. Utica outshot Potsdam 7-5 in the second half, but couldn't seize the lead in regulation.
Utica managed the only two shots of the overtime period. The first sailed wide. At 96:17, Barnard scored a very similar goal to the first two, scoring on a pass from freshman forward Byamungu Mugushu (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Grimes) at the left side of the net.
Pioneer sophomore goalie Foti Xidias (Carteret, N.J./Carteret) finished with three saves for the win. Bears senior keeper
Conor Callan (Piermont, N.Y./Tappan Zee) made one stop.
Potsdam outshot Utica 10-9 and finished with a 7-4 edge in corner kicks.
The Bears are headed to Delhi next for a 3 p.m. contest on Friday. They then travel to Alfred State on Saturday to face the Pioneers at 1 p.m.
