GENESEO, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam women's basketball team (9-7, 4-6 SUNYAC) fell to the Geneseo Knights (9-8, 6-5 SUNYAC) 67-46 on the road Friday evening. Junior forward
Jakia Howard (Syracuse, N.Y./Nottingham) led the Bears with 13 points and five rebounds. Junior guard
Dyamon Hunter (Bronx, N.Y./Thurgood Marshall Academy) had eight points and four boards.
Geneseo opened the contest with a 7-2 run, but the Bears countered with one of its own. A layup from Hunter at 4:27 tied the score at 9-9. A 6-0 flourish made it a 15-9 contest with 43 seconds left in the quarter, but sophomore guard
Bella Barner (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) closed the scoring with a 3-pointer and Potsdam trailed by just three after 10 minutes.
Hunter started off the second quarter with a quick layup for the Bears to make it a 15-14 contest. However, Geneseo pulled away after the bucket. A 12-4 run made it a 27-18 contest with 6:42 left in the half. A jumper from Howard and two free throws from freshman guard
Mikayla Shipley (North-Chili, N.Y./Churchville-Chili) closed the gap to 27-22, but Potsdam wouldn't get any closer. The Knights wrapped up the half on a 14-5 run and led 41-27 at the break. Howard had four points during the quarter and junior forward
Alyson Crosby (Brier Hill, N.Y./Hammond) scored three.
The Bears nearly matched Geneseo in the third, but found themselves down 53-38 through three quarters. Howard added another five points to her total during the third.
The Knights continued to pull away in the fourth quarter and closed out the 67-46 win. Barner and junior forward
Caroline LaFountain (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) each hit threes during the final 10 minutes.
Kiley Snow paced the Knights with 15 points. Kerry Dennin and Lauren Romito each had 10 points each.
The Bears are back in action tomorrow afternoon as they head to Brockport to take on Golden Eagles at 2 p.m.
