Bears, Brockport battle to 2-2 draw

POTSDAM, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam men's hockey team (2-14-1, 1-9-1 SUNYAC) fought to a 2-2 tie with the College at Brockport (12-5-1, 5-3-1) on Friday night. Junior forward Justin Vernace (Mississauga, Ontario/Brampton Admirals) and senior assistant captain Thomas Terranova (Middletown, N.J./Syracuse Stars) each scored for the Bears. Junior goalie Connor Green (New Port Richey, Fla./Tampa Bay Juniors) continued his stellar play with a career-high 52 saves.

Vernace put the Bears up 1-0 at 16:07 of the first period with a helper from senior forward Michael McArthur (St. Thomas, Ontario/Oswego State). Potsdam killed off a penalty and Green stopped all 10 shots he faced and Potsdam led after 20 minutes.

The Golden Eagles tied the game just 3:54 into the second period as sophomore forward Andrew Harley (Brockport, N.Y./East Coast Wizards) buried a pass at the corner of the net. The goal fired up Brockport and they repeatedly tested Green, but the Bears goalie turned aside the other 20 shots he faced in the period. Potsdam regained the lead at 12:38 as Terranova beat Golden Eagles senior goalie Nolan Egbert (North Massapequa, N.Y./UMASS Boston) in the slot. Junior defenseman Connor Cruickshank (Brampton, Ontario/Brampton Admirals) assisted on the play with a perfect pass. The Bears were back in front 2-1 through two periods.

Brockport pressed the entire third period and Green continued to frustrate his opponents with 21 more stop. The pressure finally paid off with 3:07 remaining as Golden Eagles junior defenseman Anthony Hora (Clarence, N.Y./Buffalo Jr. Sabres) tied the score.

Egbert stopped two shots in overtime and Green added another to his total as neither offense could solve them again.

Egbert finished with 19 stops. Brockport was 0-for-3 on the power play and Potsdam was 0-for-2.

The Bears are back in action tomorrow night at 7 p.m. when they host No. 2 SUNY Geneseo.
