Golden Eagles soar past Potsdam on the road

BROCKPORT, N.Y.—The College at Brockport (12-6, 7-5 SUNYAC) halted the SUNY Potsdam men's basketball team's (9-7, 7-4) five game-winning streak with a 94-73 victory on Saturday afternoon. Freshman forward Parker Kelly (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Beekmantown) led the Bears with 15 points and seven rebounds. Sophomore center Tyrese Baptiste (Brooklyn, N.Y./Eagle Academy II) scored 11 points and grabbed eight rebounds and sophomore forward Ahamadou Sillah (Bronx, N.Y./Kipp NYC College Prep) added 10 points in his return to the team.
 
The Golden Eagles used a 12-3 run to break a tie and go up 19-10 at 14:09 of the first half. Potsdam countered with a 15-10 stretch to get back within 29-25 six minutes later. Kelly powered the run with seven points, while Baptiste and freshman guard Jeff Williamson (Brooklyn, N.Y./Christ the King) each added four. Williamson hit a three and freshman guard MeSean Johnson (Ogdensburg, N.Y./Ogdensburg Free Academy) scored on a layup to get Potsdam within 31-30 at 6:40. However, Brockport seized control of the contest with a 20-4 run to close the half. The Golden Eagles hit the locker room up 51-34.
 
Brockport extended its lead during the second half. Sophomore guard Colton Huestis (Ticonderoga, N.Y./Ticonderoga) hit a three for the Bears at 15:59 to narrow the deficit to 58-43, but the Eagles picked up momentum again, leading by as many as 25 in the second half.
 
Jahidi Wallace led all scorers with 27 points. Mekhi Beckett had 18 points and nine rebounds for Brockport. Antonio Alvarez and David Grady also reached double digits with 16 and 12 points, respectively.
 
The Bears are back in action when they head to No. 22 Oswego State on Friday for a 7:30 p.m. contest.
