Red Dragons freeze out Bears to open 2022, 4-0

POTSDAM, N.Y.—SUNY Cortland (9-2, 5-2 NEWHL) scored two power-play goals and downed the SUNY Potsdam women's hockey team (3-9-1, 1-5-1) 4-0 on Friday evening. Graduate student forward Katie DeVoe (Mississauga, Ontario/Vaughn Flames) scored twice for the Red Dragons and Kait Bourgeois (Cobden, Ontario/Ottawa Thunder) had a goal and an assist. Bears sophomore goalie Ellie Zurfluh (Aravada, Colo./Team Colorado) made 27 saves.

Cortland opened the scoring 4:01 into the contest after forcing a turnover. Red Dragon senior forward Amanda Gaffney (Williamsville, N.Y./Amherst Knights) got a stick on a loose puck and directed it over to Bourgeois at the Red Dragons' blueline. The sophomore fired a wrist shot towards the Potsdam goal where it was tipped past Zurfluh by DeVoe to give Cortland the 1-0 lead. The Bears had a 5-on-3 power play just over halfway through the period. Potsdam got the puck along the blueline to junior forward Alex Quinn (Potsdam, N.Y./St. Lawrence Steel). She stepped in and fired a shot through a screen, but rang it off the post to keep it a 1-0 game. Later in the period, freshman forward Lyvia Chambers (Buffalo, N.Y./Niagara Jr. Purple Eagles) brought the puck down the left side of the ice and cut to the net while making a between-the-legs move to create a scoring chance. The freshman skater put a backhand shot on the goal, but was stopped by Cortland freshman goalie Molly Goergen (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie). Cortland outshot Potsdam 11-8 in the opening period.

Cortland made it a 2-0 game with a power-play goal at 6:22 of the second period. Freshman forward Mia Hlasnick (Olean, N.Y./Niagara Jr. Eagles) moved the puck to junior captain Dany Donegan (Cicero, N.Y./Syracuse Nationals), who dished it over to Bourgeois. Bourgeois fired towards goal and found the top left corner of the net. The Red Dragons kept the pressure on for the rest of the period, but didn't add to the lead.

Cortland added two goals in the third period. Senior forward Emily Kromer (Angola, N.Y./Nazareth College) made it 3-0 at 6:27 with an even-strength marker. At 11:08 DeVoe struck again with a power-play goal to close the scoring.

Goergen finished with 17 saves for the shutout. The Red Dragons were 2-for-4 on the power play and the Bears were 0-for-4.

The teams go at it again tomorrow at 3 p.m. in Maxcy Ice Arena.
