POTSDAM, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam women's volleyball team (10-6, 1-3 SUNYAC) defeated SUNY Oneonta (6-8, 1-4), 3-2 (25-19, 19-25, 27-25, 15-25, 16-14). In the second match, Potsdam went 5 sets with John Jay (6-6) to get their second win on the day, winning 3-2 (25-14, 25-22, 23-25, 21-25, 15-10).
The Bears grinded out their first victory over the Red Dragons since 2013. They took set one 25-19 before falling in set two by the same score. They outlasted Oneonta 27-25 in set three before falling 25-15 in set four. In set five, the Bears were down 13-9 before pulling out the 16-14 win to clinch the victory. Senior captain
Jessica Ader (Highland Mills, N.Y./Monroe-Woodbury) led Potsdam with a season-high 23 kills and 23 digs along with two blocks. Junior outside hitter
Sophia Rowny (Glenville, N.Y./Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) contributed a career-high 19 kills and 10 digs along with two aces. Senior setter
Colleen Murphy (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) registered 23 assists, eight digs and four aces. Freshman setter
Sophia Layer (Winthrop, N.Y./Potsdam) added 19 assists and four aces. Senior libero
Marley Hawthorne (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) had three aces.
Fifth-year middle blocker Clara Culeton (Oswego, N.Y./Oswego) led Oneonta with 20 kills, seven blocks and three aces. Junior middle blocker Ashanti Davis (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) had 17 kills and a block. Fifth-year middle blocker Isabella Fabrizio (Highland Mills, N.Y./Cornwall) added 12 kills, 11 digs and five aces. Senior setter Kayla Rende (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) posted a contest-best 58 assists.
Against the Bloodhounds, the Bears took the first two sets 25-24 and 25-19. Then the Bloodhounds evened the score by winning sets three and four against the Bears. But the Bears took over in the fifth set, beating the Bloodhounds 15-10. Ader finished the match with a team high of 17 kills and 24 digs. Senior outside hitter Mikalya Meyers (Gloversville, N.Y./Mayfield) racked up 13 kills, and senior defensive specialist
Abygail Olejnik (Bakersfield, CA/Bakersfield) had 21 digs against the Bloodhounds. Murphy collected 24 assists, while Layer had 18 assists and five aces for the Bears.
Sophomore outside hitter Faith Harder (Bremerton, WA/Olympic) led the Bloodhounds with 13 kills, while sophomore libero Taylor Hunt (Fredericksburg, VA/Stafford) had 20 digs against the Bears. Sophomore Setter Meghan Smith (Farmingville, N.Y./Sachem East) had three aces and 34 assists for the Bloodhounds.
The Bears will be on the road Friday October 7th as they take on the Fredonia Bule Devils at 6 P.M and Saturday October 8th against Buffalo State at 1 P.M
