Bears break Mustangs, 5-0

Morrisville, N.Y. – The SUNY Potsdam men's soccer team (5-4-4) came out with a 5-0 victory over Morrisville State (4-7) on Wednesday evening. Five different Bears scored goals during the contest. Sophomore midfielder Zach Cunningham (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East) and senior forward Gabriel Lizana (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) each had two assists.

Potsdam came out of the gates as the aggressors to begin the opening half of play. At 1:46, Cunningham connected with sophomore forward Justin Mossey (Amity Harbor, N.Y./Kellenburg Memorial) who slipped a shot bottom right of the goalkeeper for the first goal of the contest. About six minutes later, Potsdam would strike again as senior defenseman Raymond Jones (Queensbury, N.Y./Queensbury) scored off a pass from junior forward Anderson Velasquez (Bronx, N.Y./Marble Hill). The Bears now lead the Mustangs 2-0. As the first half progressed, Potsdam continued to bully the Mustangs. At 13:50, Cunningham placed another dime to sophomore midfielder Owen Santos (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) who sent a shot top shelf for the Bears third goal of the contest. Then with 10 minutes remaining in the half, Lizana drifted a pass to freshman midfielder Euan Reynolds (East Aurora, N.Y./East Aurora) who banked the ball in the top left corner of the net. The Bears took a 4-0 lead into the break.

The Bears continued to keep the pressure on the Mustangs as the second half commenced. Five minutes into the half, sophomore midfielder Logan Hinnerschietz (Mount Sinai, N.Y./Mount Sinai) took a quick shot off a free kick opportunity but was turned away by a Morrisville defender. Later at 55:19, Hinnerschietz redeemed himself as he collected the ball from Lizana to send a bullet past Mustang goalkeeper Nicholas Beevers for the Bears fifth goal of the game. Potsdam continued their defensive dominance in the second half as the Bears went on to capture the 5-0 victory.

Junior goalkeeper Lucas Schiel (Bremen, Germany/Colegio Humboldt) recorded two saves on the evening. Freshman goalkeeper Ian Schwartz (Amsterdam, N.Y./Broadalbin-Perth) turned away a shot at 76:56. Freshman Evan Jacobs (Binghamton, N.Y./Chenango Forks) did not face a shot in the 27 minutes he played in the combined shutout. Beevers made six saves for the Mustangs.

The Bears had a 19-7 advantage in shots and a 4-1 edge in corner kicks.

Potsdam returns to SUNYAC play this weekend as they host Buffalo State on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
