Napoleon, Bowie score to lead Bears past Bengals, 2-1

BUFFALO, N.Y.—Freshman forward Meg Napoleon (Lyons, N.Y./Newark) and senior forward Mackenzie Bowie (Mechanicville, N.Y./Mechanicville) each scored to lift the SUNY Potsdam women's soccer team (7-7-1, 3-4-1 SUNYAC) to a 2-1 win at Buffalo State (6-5-3, 1-4-2) on Saturday afternoon. Junior goalkeeper Savannah Bowie (Mechanicville, N.Y./Mechanicville) made three saves for her eighth career win.

Defense controlled the first half. The Bengals outshot Potsdam 6-2, but managed to get three of the shots on goal. However, Bowie handled each chance to keep the contest scoreless through 45 minutes. The Bears earned the only corner kick of the half.

Potsdam struck quickly in the final period. At 47:41, Napoleon gave the Bears the lead with an assist from freshman defender Emma Wilson (Nesconset, N.Y./Sachem East). The Bears held the edge in play for much of the second half, outshooting the Bengals 5-3. At 84:52, Bowie made it a 2-0 contest with the 21st goal of her career. The goal proved even bigger minutes later as Kaylee Valentic struck for Buffalo State to close the gap to 2-1. However, Potsdam's defense clamped down in the final few minutes and the Bengals were unable to create another chance.

Isabella Vene made one save in goal for Buffalo State. The Bengals outshot Potsdam 9-7, but the Bears edged Buffalo State 4-2 in corners.

The goal ties Bowie with Lacy Malbeuf '09 and Cortney Poirier '10 for sixth place on the program's all-time goals list.

The Bears are back in action on Tuesday afternoon when they head to Castleton University for a 4 p.m. nonconference match with the Spartans.
