Spartans overpower Bears, 3-0

CASTLETON, VT.—Castleton University (6-9-1) scored twice in the second half to seal a 3-0 victory over the SUNY Potsdam women's soccer team (7-8-1) on Tuesday afternoon. Junior goalkeeper Savannah Bowie (Mechanicville, N.Y./Mechanicville) made eight saves for the Bears.

After an even start to the contest, the Spartans drew first blood at 29:20. Jamie Ledoux made it a 1-0 contest with an assist from Ashley Meczywor after a scramble off a corner kick. Castleton used pressure to generate three corners in the first half, but Bowie, who made four saves, and Potsdam's defense kept the contest close. The score was unchanged at the break.

The Bears outplayed the Spartans at times in the second half, outshooting the hosts 12-9 in the final 45 minutes. However, Castleton added two more markers. Brytney Moore made it 2-0 at 48:30 on an assist from Megan Ezzo after another corner. At 57:57, Ezzo set up Alexis Billings for the contest's final tally.

Alex Benfatti earned the win with two saves in the first half. Emma Ezzo stopped four shots in the second half to preserve the shutout. The shots were dead even at 16, but the Spartans had a 6-4 edge in corner kicks.

The Bears wrap up the regular season on Saturday at noon when they head to SUNY Geneseo for a critical SUNYAC contest.
