Mossey rallies Bears to 1-1 draw with #16 Oneonta

ONEONTA, N.Y. – Sophomore forward Justin Mossey (Amity Harbor, N.Y./Kellenburg) scored in the 89th minute to rally the SUNY Potsdam men's soccer team (4-3-4, 0-2-3) to a 1-1 tie against SUNY Oneonta (7-1-2, 2-1-1) on Wednesday night. Junior goalkeeper Lucas Schiel (Bremen, Germany/Colegio Humboldt) handled five saves in the game.

Nine minutes into the opening half, Oneonta midfield Malcolm Swett kicked in a goal off a corner kick from teammate Ethan Brunell to take the early 1-0 lead. The Bears continued to keep the pressure on the Oneonta for the remainder of the half. At 33:48, junior forward Anderson Velasquez (Bronx, N.Y./Marble Hill) attempted to squeeze a left-footer by Red Dragon goalkeeper Nate Hanna, but to no avail. A physical first half saw 12 fouls committed by both teams as the Red Dragons took the 1-0 advantage into the break.

Five minutes into the second half, Mossey fired a shot on Hanna who collected it for his first save of the half. At 67:39, Mossey made two more shot attempts but was unsuccessful. Keeping the pressure on the Oneonta defense, the Bears were able to find Velasquez who booted one toward the bottom left of the goal. Hanna was able to turn the shot away, making his fourth save of the half. Coming down to the wire, Potsdam had one more chance to score as the Bears were awarded a corner kick with 15 seconds remaining in the contest. Sophomore midfielder Zach Cunningham (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East) placed a dime to Mossey who finally got his redemption on Hanna to tie the game 1-1. The Red Dragons eventually ran out of time as the contest ended in a 1-1 draw.

Hanna ended the game with five saves for Oneonta. The Red Dragons outshot the Bears 12-9 and had a 9-2 edge in corner kicks.

The Bears are scheduled to compete again on Saturday afternoon when they travel to SUNY Fredonia for a 1:30 p.m. start.
