POTSDAM, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam women's soccer team (6-7-1, 2-4-1 SUNYAC) erased an early deficit on a penalty-kick goal from sophomore forward
Sarah Emmi (Huntington, N.Y./John Glenn) to tie Fredonia (2-6-4, 0-4-2) 1-1 on Saturday afternoon.
Defense was tight in the first half, but the Blue Devils struck first. At the 16:20 mark, the Bears attempted to clear the ball. Fredonia senior midfielder Jordan Barrett (Wyoming, N.Y./Pavilion) trapped the ball and launched a long shot toward the goal. Potsdam freshman goalie
Rylee Semco (Slate Hill, N.Y./Minisink Valley) dove to her left and got a hand on the ball, but not enough to prevent it from bounding into the goal. Semco and Bears senior goalie
Chloe Gordon (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) each made a save in the first half. Fredonia held the 1-0 advantage at the break.
Nearly the first 20 minutes of the second half were played in the midfield, with the Bears creating the only chance. At 63:29, Fredonia senior goalie Sabrina Suriani (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) received a yellow card. The play resulted in a penalty kick, which Emmi effortlessly buried in the right corner of the goal to tie the score. The Bears outplayed and outshot the Blue Devils the rest of the contest, but couldn't net the go-ahead marker.
Semco finished with two saves in 82 minutes and Gordon stopped one shot in eight minutes. Suriani made five saves for Fredonia.
Potsdam outshot the Blue Devils 11-8 on the afternoon, but Fredonia finished with a 3-2 edge in corner kicks.
