POTSDAM, N.Y.--Third ranked SUNY Geneseo (4-1, 2-0 SUNYAC) scored four power-play goals in a 7-1 victory over the SUNY Potsdam men's hockey team (0-4, 0-3) on Friday night. Senior defenseman
Ryan Lieth (Warwick, N.Y./New York Apple Core) scored for the Bears.
The Bears generated the first good chance of the contest as senior
Robert Clerc (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Oswego State) broke loose. He skated in and fired, but Geneseo senior goalie Matt Petizian (Missisauga, Ontario/Hawkesbury Hawks) made the save. The Knights slowly shifted the momentum. At the 3:36 mark, junior forward Jared Thomas (South Glens Falls, N.Y./Boston Bandits) snuck a shot just inside the right post for a 1-0 lead. Moments later the Bears were whistled for a five-minute major and the Knights picked up their play. However, Potsdam killed the penalty, thanks in part to a hooking call against Geneseo. Green handled the remaining shots that came his way and finished the first with 16 saves and the Bears trailing by just one.
Geneseo started quickly in the second period. Just 48 seconds in, sophomore forward Domenic Garozzo (Sewell, N.J./Boston Jr. Bruins) made it a 2-0 game. Nearly two minutes later, sophomore forward Peter Morgan (Sarasota, Fla./Kenai River Brown Bears) tripled the lead. The Bears evened the play as the period continued. At the eight minute mark, the teams were called for matching minors. At 8:36, Leith finished a pass from graduate student forward
Jack Bloem (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Connecticut Rangers) to close the gap to 3-1. Graduate student
Justin Geary (Clifton Park, N.Y./Wilkes University) picked up the second assists. At 16:15, the Bears were called for another minor and the Knights took advantage. Garozzo struck again at 17:11. Geneseo led 4-1 after 20 minutes.
The Knights broke the game open with three power-play goals in the third period. Sophomore forward Stephan Miklakos (Pelham, N.Y./Connecticut Rangers) scored at 5:17.
