POTSDAM, N.Y.—SUNY Brockport (3-2, 2-1 SUNYAC) defeated the SUNY Potsdam men's hockey team (0-5, 0-4) 4-2 on Saturday night. Freshman forward
Ryan Mahlmeister (Massapequa, N.Y./PAL Junior Islanders) scored his first collegiate goal for the Bears and senior defenseman Ryan Leith (Warwick, N.Y./New York Apple Core) scored his second in as many nights.
The Bears were called for two penalties in the first seven minutes of the contest. They killed off the first one expertly, but paid on the second. A turnover at the right side of then net resulted in freshman forward Matt Anastasio (North Babylon, N.J./NJ 87's) tapping home the Golden Eagles first goal of the game at 7:32. Just 1:12 later, junior forward Andrew Harley (Brockport, N.Y./East Coast Wizards) knocked home a loose puck after a scrum in front of the net. The Bears went on their first power play at 12:26 and made the most of it. Junior forward
Josh Bifolchi (Ottawa, N.Y./Mississauga Chargers) dug the puck free and centered it to Mahlmeister. The freshman then tucked it between the pads of Brockport senior goalie Andrew Curry (Freeland, Mich./Boston Jr. Rangers) at 13:54. Brockport headed into the first intermission up 2-1.
The teams traded power plays throughout the second period, but were unable capitalize until late in the period. At 17:02, Leith took control of the puck at the left point. He skated to the right point and into the right faceoff circle and wristed a high shot into the net for a power-play goal to tie the game. However, the penalties kept coming and freshman forward Josh Grund (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Boston Jr. Rangers) scored on the man advantage to put the Brockport back on top. The Golden Eagles held a 3-2 lead after 40 minutes.
A protocol violation gave the Bears a power play to start the third period, but they couldn't draw even. After several chances, Brockport added some insurance. Sophomore forward Chris Aarons (Clifton Park, N.Y./New Hampshire Avalanche) made it 4-2 at 9:01. Potsdam tested Curry 10 times in the final period, but couldn't break through. The Bears pulled senior goalie
Connor Green (New Port Richey, Fla./Tampa Bay Juniors) with 1:25 remaining, but the score was unchanged.
Green finished with 25 saves and Curry had 30 stops for the win. The Golden Eagles were 2-for-6 on the power play and the Bears finished 2-for-4.
Potsdam is back in action when the Bears head to SUNY Canton on Tuesday night for a 7 p.m. contest with the Kangaroos.
