Red Dragons singe Bears in SUNYAC opener

CORTLAND, N.Y.—SUNY Cortland (2-0-1, 1-0 SUNYAC) defeated the SUNY Potsdam men's hockey team (0-2, 0-1) 7-1 on Friday evening. Junior forward Jack Loran (Massena, N.Y./New England Wolves) scored for the Bears.
 
Trevor Veneklase opened the scoring just 1:59 into the contest to give the Red Dragons a 1-0 lead. Potsdam countered on the power play at 12:34. Loran evened the contest with helpers from sophomore defenseman Drew Rose (Brasher Falls, N.Y./Utica Jr. Comets) and senior forward Nick Alfieri (Buffalo, N.Y./Buffalo Jr. Sabres). The draw lasted just over four minutes as Colby Seitz put Cortland up for good at 16:50. Senior goalie Stephen Friedland (West Bloomfield, Mich./East Coast Wizards) made 11 saves and Potsdam trailed 2-1 after one.
 
The Red Dragons put the game away with three goals in the middle stanza. Cameron Knowlton struck at 8:43. Veneklase notched his second at 9:32 and Nate Berke made it 5-1 at the 13-minute mark. Friedland stopped another 14 shots in the second period.
 
Zack Smith scored a power-play goal just 23 seconds into the third period. He then repeated the feat at 10:45 to close the scoring at 7-1. Friedland added another 15 stops to his total.
 
Friedland finished with 40 saves in his first Potsdam start. Luca Durante made 31 stops for the victory. Potsdam was 1-for-10 on the power play and Cortland went 2-for-9.
 
The Bears are back in action tomorrow night when they head to Oswego State for a 7 p.m. showdown with the 10th-ranked Lakers.
