No. 2 Cardinals finish sweep of Bears

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y.—Second ranked Plattsburgh State (19-2-1, 14-0-1 NEWHL) scored three times in the first period and three times in the third as the Cardinals downed the SUNY Potsdam women's hockey team (8-13-1, 6-9-1) 7-2 on Saturday afternoon. Junior forwards Emily DellaNeve (Buffalo, N.Y./Buffalo Bisons) and Megan Teachout (Auburn, N.Y./Oswego State) each scored for the Bears.
 
Annie Katonka and Mae Olshansky scored less than two minutes apart in the first period to give Plattsburgh a 2-0 lead at 4:52. DellaNeve got the Bears on the board at 14:00 with an assist from freshman forward Lyvia Chambers (Buffalo, N.Y./Niagara Jr. Purple Eagles). Katonka struck again at 15:27 and the Cardinals led 3-1 after one.
 
Katonka completed her hat trick with the lone goal of the second period at 17:12.
 
Erin McArdele made it 5-1 at 4:19 of the second period and Ivy Boric added a sixth goal just 22 seconds later. Teachout made the most of a power-play opportunity to get Potsdam within 6-2 at 10:18. Senior captain Ellie Cleary (Buffalo, N.Y./Buffalo Bisons) and junior forward Kaylee Merrill (Wasilla, Alaska/Anchorage North Stars) each assisted on the goal. Tatem Cheney then closed the scoring for Plattsburgh at 14:06.
 
Sophomore goalie Ellie Zurfluh (Aravada, Colo./Team Colorado) made a career-high 56 saves for the Bears. Lilla Nease stopped 19 shots for the Cardinals.
 
Potsdam was 1-for-2 on the power play and Plattsburgh was 0-for-3.
 
The Bears are back in action on Tuesday when they host Oswego State at 7 p.m.
