CLERMONT, FLA.—Alfred University (3-1) and Johnson & Wales University (R.I.) (4-0) each defeated the SUNY Potsdam softball team (0-4) on Tuesday evening. The Saxons downed the Bears 8-2 and the Wildcats overpowered Potsdam 14-3
Against the Saxons, Alfred broke the contest open with a five-run fifth. The Saxons took a 2-0 lead in the second inning with a hit-by-pitch and fielder's choice. The Bears rallied to tie the score in the bottom of the inning. Freshman right fielder
Giavanna Marco (Mastic Beach, N.Y./William Floyd) got Potsdam on the board with a single to right to knock in freshman left fielder
Danielle Moscarello (Arlington, Vt./Mount Anthony Union). Senior catcher
Hailey LaGiudice (Mount Sinai, N.Y./Mount Sinai) then evened the score on a fielder's choice. Alfred took the lead for good with a sacrifice fly in the top of the fourth. The Saxons made it 8-2 with five runs on four hits in the fifth.
Senior pitcher
Sierra Ashley (Ogdensburg, N.Y./Lisbon) (0-2) went the distance for the Bears, allowing eight runs on seven hits and seven walks, while striking out three. Mikaela Perez (2-0) picked up the win for the Saxons, allowing one earned run and six hits over five innings. Megan Bennett allowed just one hit in the final two scoreless innings.
Moscarello was 2-for-2 for Potsdam with a run scored. Marco was 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI. Seven different Saxons had a hit, but shortstop Ashley Lugo was 1-for-4 with two runs and two RBI from the leadoff spot.
