Cardinals edge Bears in doubleheader

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y.—Plattsburgh State (10-14, 6-6 SUNYAC) defeated the SUNY Potsdam softball team (0-25, 0-12) twice on Saturday afternoon. The Cardinals took game one 4-0 and game two 7-1.

In the opener, Plattsburgh scored a run in the third, a run in the fourth and two in the fifth. The first two runs came on a ground out and a fielder's choice. Cardinal shortstop Claire Palmer made it 3-0 with a triple down the left field line and centerfielder Kristen Langdon closed the scoring with a base hit up the middle to bring in Palmer.

Sophomore Anna Brown (Ellenburg Depot, N.Y./Northern Adirondack) pitched well for the Bears, allowing the four runs on seven hits and striking out two in six innings. Julia Golino (4-4) tossed a one-hit shutout for Plattsburgh and struck out six. Senior second baseman Vanessa Brandt (Saugerties, N.Y./Saugerties) had the lone hit for Potsdam.

The Cardinals started quickly in game two, scoring three runs in the first. The first came in via a wild pitch and pitcher Kristina Maggiacomo knocked in the other two with a double to left. Another wild pitch made it 4-0 Plattsburgh. Brandt got a run back for Potsdam in the top of the fourth, doubling to right and coming around to score on an error. The Cardinals added insurance in the bottom of the sixth as Langdon hit a three-run bomb over the right field fence.

Senior Sierra Ashley (Ogdensburg, N.Y./Lisbon) (0-12) allowed six earned runs on eight hits in six innings for Potsdam. Maggiacomo (5-6) didn't allow an earned run in seven innings, while striking out three.

Palmer was 2-for-3 with two runs for Plattsburgh and Maggiacomo was a perfect 3-for-3. Brandt was 2-for-3 to lead the Bears.

Potsdam is back in action tomorrow when the Bears head to SUNY Cortland for a 2 p.m. doubleheader.
