Bears bow to Red Dragons twice

CORTLAND, N.Y.—SUNY Cortland (20-12, 11-3 SUNYAC) swept a doubleheader from the SUNY Potsdam softball team (0-27, 0-14) on Sunday afternoon. Cortland won the first game 6-0 and took the second game 11-4.
 
The Red Dragons took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first of the opener on a double to left off the bat of first baseman McKenna Barry. An RBI single from third baseman Alyssa Finno made it 3-0 in the bottom of the third. Finno doubled in another run in the bottom of the fifth and designated player Lizzy Byers knocked in the last two runs in the same inning with a single to left.
 
Sophomore pitcher Anna Brown (Ellenburg Depot, N.Y./Northern Adirondack) (0-14) allowed the six runs on nine hits in six innings. Karlee Weeden (10-3) one-hit the Bears and struck out nine for her shutout.
 
Barry finished 2-for-4 with a run and two RBI and Finno finished 2-for-2 with a run and two RBI. Second baseman Halle Wright walked three times and scored three runs.
 

Cortland jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the bottom of the first in game two. The Red Dragons got their first two runs on a single and a fielder's choice, but the rest came on a grand slam from Byers. Byers then hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the second to extend the lead to 6-0.
 
Potsdam got four back in the top of the fourth. Freshman centerfielder Danielle Moscarello (Arlington, Vt./Mount Anthony Union) scored on an error. Sophomore pinch runner Samantha Harrison (Willsboro, N.Y./Willsboro) came in on an RBI ground out from junior left fielder Emily Beck (Lowville, N.Y./Beaver River). Sophomore designated player Kat Tompkins (Pleasant Valley, N.Y./Arlington) scored on a wild pitch and junior third baseman Madison McCormick (Ogdensburg, N.Y./Heuvelton) drove in sophomore right fielder Hope Sandor (North Salem, N.Y./North Salem) with a single up the middle. Cortland closed the scoring in the bottom of the fifth with two more runs. Wright had an RBI single to right and centerfielder Gina Meyers scored on a fielder's choice.
 
Senior pitcher Sierra Ashley (Ogdensburg, N.Y./Lisbon) (0-13) allowed nine earned runs on five hits and eight walks in six innings, while recording three strikeouts. Isabel Milazzo (3-7) earned the win for the Red Dragons, not allowing an earned run on five hits in four innings. Barry picked up the save after allowing just four hits in three scoreless innings.
 
Wright was 2-for-4 with a run and two RBI. Byers was 2-for-3 with two runs and seven RBI. Junior first baseman Anna Grottola (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Connetquot) and Moscarello were each 2-for-4 the Bears. McCormick finished 2-for-3 with an RBI.
 
The Bears are back in action on Tuesday when they host SUNY Canton for a 3 p.m. doubleheader on Senior Day.
