Blue Devils take two from Bears to wrap up season

FREDONIA, N.Y.—Fredonia (14-24, 9-9 SUNYAC) took the season's final doubleheader from the SUNY Potsdam softball team (0-33, 0-18) on Saturday afternoon. The Blue Devils won game one 11-0 and game two 11-3.
 
In the opener, Fredonia scored four times in the bottom of the second. First baseman Nicole Kumro drove in the first run with a double to left. Pitcher Emily Chelius knocked in the second with a single up the middle. Sacrifice flies from centerfielder Marisa Sultana and second baseman Allie Wandell brought in the next two. The Blue Devils broke the game open with six runs in the third. Kumro doubled in two more. Chelius singled in the seventh run and right fielder Alyssa Piniewski doubled in the last three runs. A sacrifice fly from left fielder Megan Guidry in the fourth closed the scoring at 11-0.
 
Sophomore pitcher Anna Brown (Ellenburg Depot, N.Y./Northern Adirondack) (0-17) allowed 10 earned runs in four innings. Chelius (11-17) allowed just two hits and struck out three in five innings.
 
Junior first baseman Anna Grottola (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Connetquot) and Brown were each 1-for-2 for Potsdam. Kumro led Fredonia offensively, going 3-for-3 with two runs and three RBI. Chelius was 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI.
 
 
Chelius doubled in Kumro to give Fredonia a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second in game two. The Bears countered with three in the top of the fourth to grab the lead. Senior catcher Hailey LaGiudice (Mount Sinai, N.Y./Mount Sinai) hit a two-run homer to score freshman centerfielder Danielle Moscarello (Arlington, Vt./Mount Anthony Union). Sophomore right fielder Hope Sandor (North Salem, N.Y./North Salem) followed with a single to score Brown and make it 3-1. However, Fredonia rallied four five runs in both the fourth and fifth innings to close out the 11-3 victory.
 
Senior Sierra Ashley (Ogdensburg, N.Y./Lisbon) (0-15) allowed 10 earned runs on 15 hits in 4.2 innings. Vanessa Galbraith allowed the three Bears runs on three hits, while striking out four in four innings. Erin Cunningham (2-2) picked up the win in relief, allowing a hit in one inning.
 
Kumro was 3-for-3 with two runs. Shortstop Amber Piniewski was 2-for-3 with three RBI. Chelius was 3-for-3 with two runs and two RBI and Guidry finished 2-for-2 with a run and two RBI.
 
The contests marked the close of the careers of Bears seniors LaGiudice and second baseman Vanessa Brandt (Saugerties, N.Y./Saugerties).
