Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Santos leads Bears past Canton on opening day, 1-0

CANTON, N.Y.—Sophomore midfielder Owen Santos (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) scored in the 70th minute and the SUNY Potsdam men's soccer team (1-0) made it stand up in a 1-0 season-opening win at SUNY Canton (0-1) on Thursday evening. Freshman goalie Evan Jacobs (Binghamton, N.Y./Chenango Forks) made four saves for the shutout in his collegiate debut.

The Bears held the edge in play in the first half and outshot the Kangaroos 9-4. Scoring chances were hard to come by as the teams combined for just five shots on goal. Potsdam pressure created four corner kicks in the opening 45 minutes and Canton answered with two. Jacobs made two saves and the contest remained scoreless at the break.

The game continued in the same fashion through much of the second half. Jacobs stymied the Roos on their best chance early, tipping a shot over the crossbar. The Bears finally got on the board in the 70th minute. Junior forward Luke Clark (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) launched a free kick from midfield and Santos headed it past Canton goalie Owen Kwong for the 1-0 lead. The Bears controlled the play the rest of the way to close out the victory.

Potsdam outshot the Roos 14-9. Kwong made five saves. The Bears finished contest with an 8-5 advantage in corners.

Potsdam heads to Keuka College on Saturday for a 1 p.m. showdown with the Wolves.
