CANTON, N.Y. – The SUNY Potsdam women's soccer team (1-0) defeated SUNY Canton (0-1) 3-0 Thursday evening to capture the 16th annual Boyd Jones Cup. Senior forward
Mackenzie Bowie (Mechanicville, N.Y./Mechanicville), senior midfielder
Meaghan Sardi (North Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon), and sophomore midfielder
Rebecca Kohls (Lake George, N.Y./Lake George) each chipped in a goal for the Bears. Junior goalkeeper
Savannah Bowie (Mechanicville, N.Y./Mechanicville) and freshman goalkeeper
Rylee Semco (Slate Hill, N.Y./Minisink Valley) combined two saves for the shutout.
Potsdam put on an offensive clinic in the opening half, outshooting Canton 14-1. At the 34:02 mark in the first period of play, Bowie quickly fired a shot from the 18-yard box after stealing the ball from a Kangaroo defender, resulting in a 1-0 Potsdam lead. This served to be the only goal of the first half as the Bears took the 1-0 advantage into the break.
The Bears kept their foot on the pedal as the second half commenced. Five minutes into the half, sophomore midfielder
Mikayla Shipley (North Chili, N.Y./Churchville-Chili) propelled a corner kick that landed in a mob of Kangaroo defenders. Amidst all white jerseys, freshman
Emily Jordan (Lisbon, N.Y./Lisbon) located the ball and made a quick pass over to Sardi who placed the ball top shelf for Potsdam's second goal of the game. Potsdam leads the game 2-0. Ten minutes later, sophomore forward
Hailey von Ahn (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) was locked into a foot race with a Canton defender as the ball rolled towards Kangaroo territory. Utilizing her field awareness, von Ahn saved the ball on the end line and made a direct pass to cutting teammate Kohls who made Potsdam's third and final goal of the evening.
Skylar Williams finished with 12 saves for Canton. Potsdam finished the game with a 22-5 shot advantage over the Kangaroos.
With today's goal, Bowie moves to 10th on the all-time goals list with a total of 19 career goals. The Bears are now 15-0-1 against their Route 11 rivals all-time and 11-0-1 in Jones Cup play.
The Bears are scheduled to play at cross-town rival Clarkson University on Saturday at noon.
