Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Bears capsize Privateers, 3-0

THROGGS NECK, N.Y.—Junior forward Anderson Velasquez (Bronx, N.Y./Bronx, N.Y./Marble Hill) scored his third goal in as many games as the SUNY Potsdam men's soccer team (3-1) defeated SUNY Maritime (1-3-1) 3-0 on Sunday afternoon.        Freshman defender Fernando Rosas (White Plains, N.Y./White Plains) scored his first collegiate goal and junior goalkeeper Lucas Schiel (Bremen, Germany/Bremen, Germany/Colegio Humboldt) made three saves to earn his first career win.

Potsdam fired four shots on Privateers goalie Augusto Lebron in the first half, but couldn't solve him. However, a Bears' throw-in at the 21:24 mark went off two Maritime players and into the net to make it a 1-0 contest. Schiel stopped two shots in the opening period.

The Bears struck quickly in the second half. Just 1:32 in, after a centering cross, sophomore midfielder Owen Santos (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) put the ball on a tee for Velasquez who ripped it into the goal for a 2-0 lead. Nearly six minutes later, Velasquez sent a cross from well right of the goal to Rosas at the left post. Rosas tapped it in to make it a three-goal contest. Potsdam never let the Privateers get back into the game, outshooting them 10-4 in the final 45 minutes.

Lebron finished with six saves for the Privateers. Freshman Ian Schwartz (Amsterdam, N.Y./Broadalbin-Perth) played the final 11:59 in goal for the Bears and was unchallenged.

Potsdam finished with a 17-8 advantage in shots and had eight corner kicks to Maritime's one. This marked the first ever meeting between the two programs. The Bears are off to their best start since a 4-1 beginning to the 2017 season.

The Bears host St. Lawrence University in their home opener on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
