POTSDAM, N.Y.—Junior forward
Luke Clark (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) scored at the 78 minute mark to rally the SUNY Potsdam men's soccer team (3-1-1) to a 1-1 draw with St. Lawrence University (3-1-2) on Wednesday night. Bears junior goalkeeper
Lucas Schiel (Bremen, Germany/Colegio Humboldt) made five saves in the contest.
The teams went toe-to-toe through the entire first half, with the majority of the play coming in the midfield. Only five combined shots reached the net, and each one was a quality chance, but Schiel and Saints sophomore goalie George Charalambous (Nicosica, Cyprus/Dasoupoli Lycium) adeptly handled each one.
The game opened up in the SLU's favor slightly in the second half. Finally at the 75:10 mark, Schiel made a diving stop on an attempt from senior midfielder Miles Levy (Bedford, N.Y./Fox Lane). However, junior midfielder Marco Wong (Hong Kong/Northwood) drove home the rebound at the left post for a 1-0 lead. Potsdam wasted no time battling back. Less than three minutes later, junior forward
Anderson Velasquez (Bronx, N.Y./Marble Hill) found sophomore midfielder
Zach Cunningham (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East) with a long pass in the left corner of the Saints end.
He drew SLU defenders his way and sent a perfect cross into the middle of the box where Clark headed it past Charalambous for the equalizer. The Saints answered with pressure, but Schiel made a final save at 85:40. With just 1:59 to play. Junior forward Sam Pijpers (Amsterdam, Netherlands/Island School Hong Kong) rang the crossbar with a shot and Potsdam held on.
Charalambous finished with three saves. SLU outshot the Bears 13-7 and had three corners to Potsdam's two.
The Bears are back in action on Sunday when they host SUNY Cobleskill at 11 a.m.
