POTSDAM, N.Y.— Freshman defender
Emma Wilson (Nesconset, N.Y./Sachem North) scored twice help the SUNY Potsdam women's soccer team (3-3) rally past Utica University (1-3-1) on Tuesday night in the rain. Freshman forward
Meg Napoleon (Lyons, N.Y./Newark) scored the Bears first goal and junior goalkeeper
Savannah Bowie (Mechanicville, N.Y./Mechanicville) made nine saves for her sixth career win.
The Pioneers struck quickly. Just 4:42 into the contest, senior forward Ro Hernandez (Carmel, N.Y./Kennedy Catholic) picked up a pass on the left sideline, weaved around Bears defenders and fired the ball into the left corner of the net. Utica outshot the Bears 7-4 and Bowie stopped six shots in the opening 45 minutes. The Pioneers led by one at the break.
Potsdam picked up its intensity in the second half, which resulted in a 3-1 advantage in shots. At the 65:24 mark, Napoleon picked up a feed from Wilson, fought off a Pioneer defender and deposited the ball just inside the right goalpost at 66:24. Utica evened the play after the goal, but couldn't regain the lead. At 82:20, Wilson launched a direct kick from about 25 yards out into the top right corner of the net to make it 2-1 Potsdam. With just 2:47 remaining, junior forward Julianna Beaulieu (Chicopee,Mass./Chicopee Comprehensive) lofted a ball over the Bears' defense where junior midfielder Gabriela Daumont (Latham, N.Y./Shaker) picked it up. She went in all alone and tied the game. Seemingly headed for a draw, Potsdam and Warren weren't finished. With just 45 seconds on the clock, Warren repeated her feat, launching another long direct kick into the right corner of the net.
Utica junior goalie Courtney Connolly (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley) made three saves. Potsdam outshot the Pioneers 14-12 and had a 5-0 advantage in corner kicks. The Bears are now 14-13-1 against Utica in the all-time series.
Potsdam is back in action on Saturday at 1 p.m. when the Bears host SUNY New Paltz in their SUNYAC opener.
