POTSDAM, N.Y.—SUNY New Paltz (4-1-1, 1-0 SUNYAC) scored twice in the first half en route to a 3-0 victory over the SUNY Potsdam women's soccer team (3-4, 0-1) on Saturday afternoon. Freshman goalkeeper Ryelee Semco (Slate Hill, N.Y./Minisink Valley) made eight saves for the Bears.
The Hawks jumped out in front just 5:37 into the contest. Freshman forward Rachel Eisert (Bellmore, N.Y./Wellington C. Mepham) headed home a corner kick from sophomore midfielder Emma Voege (East Northport, N.Y./Elwood-John Glenn) for the 1-0 lead. Both teams struggled for offense for much of the rest of the half, but New Paltz extended its lead at 38:18. Senior midfielder Jillian Dantona (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown) lofted a pass to the front of the net and sophomore forward Gaby Treble (Oyster Bay, N.Y./Oyster Bay) flicked the ball past Semco in one motion to make it 2-0 Hawks. The score was unchanged at the break.
The second half was tightly contested as well through the first 20 minutes. In the 64th minute, freshman Addison Weiner (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown) finished a cross from sophomore forward Parris Burke (Bellport, N.Y./Bellport) to extend the lead to three goals. The Hawks defense then clamped down the rest of the way to close out the shutout victory.
Sophomore goalie Maddie Franklin (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) made three saves in the first half for the win.
The Bears are back in action tomorrow at 1 p.m. when they host SUNY Cobleskill.
