ALFRED, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam women's volleyball team (1-0) defeated the SUNY Canton Kangaroos (0-1) during the first day of the Saxon Classic in three sets (25-17, 25-20, 25-16). Junior outside hitter Sophia Rowny (Glenville N.Y./Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) led the Bears with 12 kills on the night.
Senior outside hitter Jessica Ader (Highland Mills, N.Y./Monroe-Woodbury) put up 11 kills, and 8 digs while Senior Setter Colleen Murphy (Clifton Park, N.Y/Shenendehowa) had 14 assists on the night. Freshman Setter Sophia Layer (Winthrop, N.Y./Potsdam) had 12 assists and 5 Aces. Senior Outside Hitter Mackenzie Fischer (Cottekill, N.Y/Rondout Valley) finished the night with a match high of 17 digs.
Alyssa Adams led the Roos with 7 kills. Bailey Nadeau had 10 assists while Kay Carlson put up 11 digs.
The Bears are back in action tomorrow for the final day of the tournament. Potsdam faces Alfred University at 11 a.m. and William Smith at 3 p.m.
