Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Roos double up Bears in Massena, 4-2

MASSENA, N.Y.—SUNY Canton (6-10) scored twice in the second period and it was the difference in a 4-2 victory over the SUNY Potsdam men's hockey team (4-12-1) at Massena Arena on Wednesday night. Senior defenseman Connor Cruickshank (Brampton, Ontario/Brampton Admirals) and freshman forward Jeremy Quesnel (Alexandria, Ontario/Hawkesbury Hawks) each scored for the Bears.

Canton got on the board first at 9:49. Matthew Headland struck to give the Roos a 1-0 lead. Potsdam answered just 49 seconds later. Cruickshank fired a rocket from the right point that Canton goalie Kelson Hooper may have never seen to tie the game. Quesnel and freshman forward Mathieu Parent (Kapukasing, Ontario/Renfrew Wolves) assisted on the play. Hooper ended the first with 16 stops and Bears senior goalie Connor Green (New Port Richey, Fla./Tampa Bay Juniors) had 14 saves.

The Kangaroos scored the only two goals of the penalty-filled second period. After Potsdam was whistled for roughing at 9:09, Canton made the most of the opportunity. Jack Seamans made it 2-1 eight seconds later. Zac Sirota extended the Roos' lead to two with an even strength marker at 16:13. Green stopped another 11 shots in the second, but the Bears were down 3-1 after 40 minutes.

Canton struck just 35 seconds into the third period. Brendan Morrow found daylight five-hole to make it 4-1. Potsdam fought to make up ground, outshooting the Roos 17-11 in the third. At 9:46, Quesnel scored to get the Bears within two. Parent and graduate student forward Michael McArthur (St. Thomas, Ontario/Oswego State) picked up the assists. Potsdam called timeout with 1:26 remaining and pulled Green with 1:12 left. However, Canton was able to withstand the pressure and close out the win.

Green finished with 35 saves and Hooper stopped 37 shots for the victory. Potsdam was 0-for-2 on the power play and the Roos were 1-for-4.

The Bears are now off until they host SUNY Cortland at 7 p.m. on Friday, January 20.
