POTSDAM, N.Y. – The SUNY Potsdam men's basketball team (6-9, 4-5 SUNYAC) dropped a close contest to SUNY Geneseo (7-8, 3-4 SUNYAC) 64-58 on Friday evening at the Jerry Welsh Gymnasium. Sophomore guard
Jeff Williamson (Brooklyn, N.Y./Christ the King) recorded career-highs in points and rebounds with a 24 point and 10 rebound double-double. Senior forward
Brandon Segar Jr. (Jamaica, N.Y./Richmond Hill) registered his seventh double-double of the season with 13 points and 11 rebounds to compliment his teammate.
Segar asserted himself early in the opening half as he scored four out of the first six points for the Bears. Geneseo lead 7-6 through five minutes. Shortly after, the Knights routed a 13-3 run to quickly put them up by 11 midways through the first half. At the 8:40 mark, Williamson managed to muscle his way down low for an offensive board and putback that trimmed the Knights lead 23-14. The Knights continued to stifle the Bears defensively, only allowing six more points and taking a 38-22 lead into the break.
The start to the second half was much the same for the Bears until Williamson broke the scoring drought by nailing a three off an assist from sophomore forward
Parker Kelly (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Beekmantown). This basket sparked a 14-5 Potsdam run that allowed the Bears to trim the Knights lead 48-42 halfway through the second half. Alongside Williamson, Junior guard
Colton Huestis (Ticonderoga, N.Y./Ticonderoga), junior guard
Isaac Oduro Jr. (Jamaica, N.Y./Christ the King), and Segar all contributed to the run. Two minutes later at 9:30, sophomore forward
Jaylin Williamson (Amityville, N.Y./Amityville) picked off a weak pass and outletted the ball to Williamson for an easy fastbreak score to close the Knights lead to five. Despite the comeback efforts by the Bears, a series of turnovers and missed opportunities would plague Potsdam for the remainder of the half, leading the way for a Knights victory.
Huestis tallied an additional seven points to help the Bears in the scoring category. Oduro continued to showcase his passing abilities by registering a career-high eight assists during the contest.
Junior guard Cole Kattan (Scarsdale, N.Y./Scarsdale) paced the Knights with 14 points while senior guard Raymond Grabowski (East Setauket, N.Y./West Melville) posted 13 points.
The Bears prepare to take the court again tomorrow when they host The College at Brockport at 4 p.m. in their second game of the weekend doubleheader.
