GENESEO, N.Y.—Seventh-ranked SUNY Geneseo (13-4-2, 7-2-1 SUNYAC) scored twice in the third period to defeat the SUNY Potsdam men's hockey team (4-15-1, 2-9) 3-1 on Friday evening. Sophomore defenseman
Drew Rose (Brasher Falls, N.Y./Utica Jr. Comets) scored for the Bears and senior goalie
Stephen Friedland (West Bloomfield, Mich./East Coast Wizards) made 32 saves.
Potsdam's defense was solid during the first period. The Bears allowed just two shots on goal during the entire 20 minutes. Potsdam also killed the only penalty of the period and generated nine shots of its own. Knights goalie Adam Harris turned aside each attempt and the contest was scoreless after one.
Geneseo finally broke through just 1:36 into the second period as Stefan Miklakos netted an even-strength marker. The goal fired up the Knights and they peppered Friedland with 18 shots over the rest of the period, but he didn't allow another goal. Potsdam's offense struggled, but was helped by a pair of Geneseo penalties. The Knights killed the first, but the Bears took advantage of the second. Geneseo was called for hooking at 17:09 and 51 seconds later, Rose tied the game. Graduate student forward
Robert Clerc (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Oswego State) and senior captain
Nick Alfieri (Buffalo, N.Y./Buffalo Jr. Sabres) assisted on the goal. The Knights took another penalty with 14 seconds left and Potsdam started the third period on the man advantage.
After Geneseo killed its penalty, it went on the attack again. Friedland turned aside another 13 shots, before the Knights that regained the lead. At 15:05, Diarmad DiMurro made it 2-1. Potsdam created several strong scoring chances as the clock ran down. Friedland was pulled for an extra attacker with 1:17 left. With 31 seconds on the clock, Mitch Machlitt scored an empty-netter to put the game away.
Harris finished with 17 saves to earn the win. Geneseo was 0-for-2 on the power play and Potsdam was 1-for-2.
