Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Cruickshank’s late goal lifts Bears over Brockport, 2-1

BROCKPORT, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam men's hockey team (5-15-1, 3-9 SUNYAC) scored twice in the third period to rally past SUNY Brockport (8-12, 3-8) 2-1 on Saturday afternoon. Graduate student captain Justin Geary (Clifton Park, N.Y./Wilkes University) and senior defenseman Connor Cruickshank (Brampton, Ontario/Brampton Admirals) each scored for the Bears. Senior goalie Connor Green (New Port Richey, Fla./Tampa Bay Juniors) made a season-high 42 saves for the win.

The Bears were on the defensive in the first period, killing three penalties. The Golden Eagles outshot Potsdam 14-8, but Green and his counterpart, Nolan Egbert, were perfect. The game was scoreless after one period.

Brockport finally got on the board early in the second. Andrew Harley made it 1-0 at 4:23. Each team had an unsuccessful power play during the period. The Golden Eagles outshot the Bears 17-16, but the score remained 1-0 after 40 minutes.

After Potsdam killed off a penalty early in the third, the Bears evened the score. Geary finished a feed from freshman forward Ryan Mahlmeister (Massapequa, N.Y./PAL Islanders) at 8:47. The pattern repeated late in the period. Two seconds after Potsdam killed another penalty, Cruickshank buried the game-winner. Freshman forward Mathieu Parent (Kapuskasing, Ontario/Renfrew Wolves) picked up the assist. Brockport pulled Egbert with 47 seconds left, but the Bears held on for the victory.

Egbert was nearly as good as Green, stopping 39 shots. Potsdam was 0-for-3 on the man advantage and Brockport went 0-for-6.

The Bears are back in action next Friday when they head to Buffalo State for a 7 p.m. contest.
