BUFFALO, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam men's hockey team (5-16-1, 3-10 SUNYAC) rallied twice before falling at Buffalo State (12-8, 7-4) in overtime on Friday night. Freshman forward
Jeremy Quesnel (Alexandria, Ontario/Hawkesbury Hawks) scored two goals for the Bears. Junior forward
Jack Loran (Massena, N.Y./New England Wolves) and graduate student forward
Robert Clerc (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Oswego State) netted the other two.
Just three minutes into the contest, the Bengals struck for two goals in 46 seconds. Aiden LaValley opened the scoring at 3:00 and Joe Glamos made it 2-0 at 3:46. On the verge of being knocked out early, Loran answered 37 seconds later at 4:23. Freshmen forwards
Mason Hoehn (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Richmond Generals) and
Ryan Mahlmeister (Massapequa, N.Y./PAL Islanders) each assisted on the goal. The Bears kept pressing and Quesnel got Potsdam even with an unassisted marker at 12:22. The Bears killed a penalty in the first and were unsuccessful on their two man advantages.
After killing another penalty early in the second, Potsdam picked up momentum. Loran nearly missed his second, hitting the post at 4:03. Clerc then gave the Bears the lead at 9:42 with helpers from graduate student forward
Michael McArthur (St. Thomas, Ontario/Oswego State) and senior captain
Nick Alfieri (Buffalo, N.Y./Buffalo Jr. Sabres). Potsdam took a tripping penalty with 1:53 left in the period and the Bengals took advantage. With just under 13 seconds remaining, Michael McCosh scored a power-play goal and the teams were even at 3-3 after 40 minutes.
The third period was tightly contested. With the Bears on the power play at 9:38, Parker Allison put the Bengals back in front with a shorthanded goal. Quesnel scored his second of the game at 14:30 to tie the score at four apiece. Freshman forward
Mathieu Parent (Kapukasing, Ontario/Renfrew Wolves) assisted on the goal. Buffalo State finished wiht a 13-10 edge in shots, but regulation ended in a tie.
Allison scored the game winner just 1:59 into overtime to give the Bengals an important victory.
Bears senior goalie
Connor Green (New Port Richey, Fla./Tampa Bay Juniors) finished with 33 saves and Bengals goalie Emil Norrman stopped 35 shots for the win.
Buffalo State was 2-for-5 on the power play and Potsdam was 0-for-5.
The Bears head to Fredonia tomorrow night for a 7 p.m. contest.
