FREDONIA, N.Y.- The SUNY Potsdam men's hockey team (5-17-1, 3-11 SUNYAC) traveled to SUNY Fredonia (6-14, 4-8 SUNYAC) for a State University of New York Athletic Conference matchup against on Saturday night at Steele Hall Ice Arena. The Blue Devils rallied past the Bears in the third period for a 4-2 win.
The Bears offense got off to an early start, junior forward
Michael Olszewski (Niagara Falls, N.Y./Cobourg Cougars) netted the first goal of the game 4:30 into the first period. Freshman forward
Jeremy Quesnel (Alexandria, Ontario/Hawkesbury Hawks) doubled the Bears lead 9:48 into the period. Potsdam senior goalie
Stephen Friedland (West Bloomfield, Mich./East Coast Wizard) was perfect in the first making 20 saves.
Blue Devils came into the second period on the penalty kill. After successfully killing the penalty, Fredonia's Craig McCabe netted one to cut the Bears lead in half. Just over the halfway mark of the period, the Bears went on a 5-on-3 power play. Fredonia successfully killed the penalties making them 4-for-4 on the night.
At 5:29 of the third period, Fredonia finally got even as Ryan Bailey was able to evade Friedland. Less than a minute later, Kurri Woodford put Fredonia up for good. Potsdam was all-hands-on deck for the the rest of the period, but just fell short. Fredonia's Bryce Whitman added an empty-netter with 23 seconds left.
Fredonia evened the season series at one win apiece after falling in Potsdam in November. Fredonia was 2-9 on the power-play and Potsdam was 0-5.
Potsdam travels to Plattsburgh State next Friday for a 7 p.m. contest.
