POTSDAM, N.Y.—SUNY Cortland (14-4, 9-2 NEWHL) scored twice early and defeated the SUNY Potsdam women's hockey team (9-9, 4-7) 4-1 on Friday afternoon. Senior forward
Megan Teachout (Auburn, N.Y./Oswego State) scored for the Bears and freshman goalie
Magalie Parent (Trois-Rivières, Quebec/Les Diablos – Cégep de Trois-Rivières) made 28 saves.
Cortland struck quickly. At 2:58, senior forward Dany Donegan (Cicero, N.Y./Syracuse Nationals) tipped a shot from the point past Parent. Nearly seven minutes later, graduate student forward Emily Kromer (Angola, N.Y./Nazareth) finished a long breakout pass by rifling the puck over Parent's shoulder into the top right corner of the net. The Red Dragons took the first penalty of the contest at 10:40 and the Bears took advantage. Cortland cleared the puck the length of the ice and Parent stopped it and handed it off to sophomore defenseman
Lyvia Chambers (Buffalo, N.Y./Niagara Jr. Purple Eagles). Chambers waited behind the net and Teachout picked up the puck, weaved her way the length of the ice and fired. Red Dragon sophomore goalie Molly Goergen (Eden Prairie, N.Y./Eden Prairie High School), slowed the puck down, but it found a way between her pads and into the net. Cortland outshot the Bears 14-7 in the first and led 2-1.
The second period saw the teams combine for five penalties and not much offense until late. Each team killed a penalty early. After matching minors expired, the Bears were called for holding at 15:25. At 16:59, graduate student forward Quinn Metcalfe (Rochester, N.Y./Rochester Monarchs) tipped a shot from the right point over Parent's left shoulder. The power-play goal gave Cortland a 3-1 lead after 40 minutes.
The Red Dragons capitalized on another power play early in the third. The Bears were called for a trip at 2:16. Just eight seconds later, senior forwards Jayden Kelley (East Berne, N.Y./CP Dynamo) scored from the slot to make it 4-1. The rest of the period was tightly contested. The Bears went on their final power play with 2:32 remaining. They pulled Parent for an extra attacker with just over a minute left, but couldn't get any closer.
Goergen finished with 17 stops for the win. Potsdam was 1-for-4 on the power play and Cortland was 2-for-5.
The Bears host first place and fourth-ranked Plattsburgh State tomorrow at 3 p.m.
