OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State Lakers (18-2, 12-1 SUNYAC) overwhelmed the SUNY Potsdam men's basketball team (6-12, 4-8 SUNYAC) 103-78 on Saturday evening. Sophomore guard
MeSean Johnson (Ogdensburg, N.Y./Ogdensburg Free Academy) posted 17 points and sophomore forward
Parker Kelly (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Beekmantown) registered 13 points to compliment his teammate.
The Bears first got on the board at 19:30 when junior forward
Ahamadou Sillah (Bronx, N.Y./Kipp NYC College Prep) slammed one home to tie the Lakers early. Sophomore guard
Jeff Williamson (Brooklyn, N.Y./Christ the King) scored five more points in the following two minutes to put Potsdam up 7-2 at the 17:58 mark. Oswego quickly countered with an 8-2 run of their own to retake the lead 10-9 at 15:50. The Bears continued to battle with the Lakers as Johnson was fouled on the shot and sank a pair of free throws to trim the Oswego lead 20-19 with 12:49 remaining. The momentum began to shift towards the Lakers when Joey Rowback hit three consecutive three-pointers to put Oswego up 31-23 midway through the first half. The Lakers continued to outscore the Bears 28-12 in the opening half as they took the 59-35 advantage into the break.
Potsdam got off to a hot start, scoring the first six points to open the second half of play. Junior guard
Isaac Oduro Jr. (Jamaica, N.Y./Christ the King) scored a quick layup followed by four points from Johnson to allow Potsdam to chip away at the Laker's lead. Both teams continued to trade baskets for the remainder of the half as Oswego took the conference victory at home.
Sillah tallied 11 points and Williamson chipped in seven for the Bears.
Devin Green led the Lakers with 18 points while Jamal Achille and Rowback each scored 15 points.
The Bears are back in action when they travel to SUNY Brockport next Friday, February 3, for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off.
