POTSDAM, N.Y.—Fourth-ranked SUNY Oneonta (11-2, 4-2 SUNYAC) defeated the SUNY Potsdam men's soccer team (3-8-1, 0-7) 4-0 on Tuesday afternoon at Maxcy Turf Field. Sophomore Joe Holder (Greenwood Lake, N.Y./Warwick) scored twice for Oneonta.
The teams battled evenly early, but a diving stop from Potsdam sophomore goalie
Ian Schwartz (Amsterdam, N.Y./Broadalbin-Perth) on a chance from Red Dragons junior forward Luigi Prosperi (Lynbrook, N.Y./Lynbrook) kept the contest scoreless. In the 30th minute, senior midfielder Ian Zingaro (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) played the ball ahead and sophomore forward Ali Somow (Utica, N.Y./Proctor) stepped around Schwartz to make it 1-0. Just over six minutes later, Zingaro set up Holder's first marker and Oneonta led 2-0 at the break.
At 59:20, sophomore forward Milton Mancias Magana (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck) extended the lead to 3-0 with a helper from freshman midfielder Erik Popp (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay). Just 40 seconds later, Bears junior forward
Peyton Snell (Parishville, N.Y./Parishville-Hopkinton) and Red Dragons senior goalie Nate Hanna (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) got tangled up. Hanna received a red card and left the game and Snell was given a yellow. At 86:51, Holder struck again to close the scoring with Zingaro's third assist of the contest.
Oneonta outshot the Bears 16-11 and the corner kicks were even at five apiece. Schwartz finished with two saves, while Hanna stopped one shot in the first 59:59. Junior goalie Jax Flugel (Rochester, N.Y.) made one save in the final 30:01.
The Bears are back in action on Saturday when they travel to SUNY Geneseo for a 1 p.m. match.
