Bears rally past Route 11 Rival Roos on Halloween, 4-1

CANTON, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam men's hockey team (1-1) scored three times in the third period to defeat SUNY Canton (0-3) 3-1 on Halloween. Freshman defenseman Jack McCandless (Victor, N.Y./Richmond Generals) and sophomore defenseman Michael Campbell (Toronto, Ontario/Jersey Whalers) each scored their first career goals and sophomore forward Jeremy Quesnel (Alexandria, Ontario/Hawkesbury Hawks) and sophomore forward Max Klanow (Holly, Mich./Hawkesbury Hawks) also found the back of the net.

The teams matched each other nearly shot for shot in the opening 20 minutes, with the host Roos finishing with an 11-9 advantage. Canton was unable to capitalize on the only power play of the period, but managed to grab the lead a few minutes later. At 13:22, Brendan Morrow got the Roos on the board. The score was unchanged at the first intermission.

McCandless got the Bears even, just 2:22 into the second period. He picked off a clearing attempt and fired a shot off a Roo defender from the left side of the net. The teams traded unsuccessful man advantages during the middle stanza. Canton went on its second power play at the end of the second, but strong play from Bears junior goalie John Werber (Skillman, N.J./Team Maryland) kept the contest even.

Potsdam jumped in front 5:17 into the third period after Quesnel jammed home a rebound. Freshman defenseman Rocco Seery (Bloomingdale, Ill./East Coast Wizards) earned the assist for his first career point. Sophomore forward Ryan Mahlmeister (Massapequa, N.Y./PAL Islanders) had the second helper. The Bears added a power-play goal at 13:02. Campbell scored from the right faceoff circle after one-timing a pass from sophomore assistant captain Mason Hoehn (Highland Ranch, Colo./Richmond Generals). Freshman defenseman  Eli Doughart-Wood (St. Louis, Mo./Navan Grads) had the second assist for his first collegiate point. Klanow sealed the win with an empty-netter with 21 seconds remaining on assists from Doughart-Wood and junior captain Drew Rose (Brashers Falls, N.Y./Utica Jr. Comets).

Werber finished with 30 saves for his second career victory. Canton goalie Nate Hopkins also made 30 stops.

The Bears outshot Canton 34-31 and was 1-for-3 on the power play. The Roos were 0-for-3 on the man advantage.

The Bears are back in action on Saturday night when they host Morrisville State at 7 p.m. to open SUNYAC play.
