POTSDAM, N.Y.—SUNY New Paltz (8-1-2, 3-1-1 SUNYAC) scored three times in the second half to end a scoreless contest and go on to a 3-0 win over the SUNY Potsdam men's soccer team (3-6-1, 0-5) on Wednesday afternoon. Senior goalie
Lucas Schiel (Bremen, Germany/Colegio Humboldt) finished with a season-high 10 saves for the Bears.
The Hawks ran up possession time in the first half, but were unable to sustain offensive pressure until late. They tested Schiel repeatedly in the final minutes. The keeper kept New Paltz off the board with seven saves in the opening 45 minutes.
The Hawks struck quickly in the second half. Junior midfielder Joseph DiPreta (Clifton Park, N.Y./Doane Stuart School) opened the scoring at 48:33, launching a long shot into the left upper corner of the net. At 61:40, senior defender Owen McGarrity (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) doubled the lead, heading home a corner kick. With just 2:32 left, senior midfielder Brian Boylan (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) picked up a pass and split two defenders before depositing the ball in the net.
Hawks junior goalie Christian Micheli (Carle Place, N.Y./St. Anthony's) made two saves for the shutout.
The Bears are back in action on Saturday, when they travel to Buffalo State for a 1 p.m. match.
