Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Lakers pull away from Bears

POTSDAM, N.Y.—Oswego State (6-4, 5-1 SUNYAC) scored three times in the third period to defeat the SUNY Potsdam men's hockey team (1-8, 0-5) 6-0 on Friday evening.

The teams battled evenly early on, but freshman goalie Lenny Perno (Rochester, N.Y./Richmond Generals) and Lakers sophomore goalie Cal Schell (Burlington, Ontario/Flin Flon Bombers) were especially sharp. Each team killed a penalty in the first 10 minutes of the contest. At 10:33, senior forward Tyler Flack (Streetsville, Ontario/North York) sniped the top right corner of the net from the right faceoff circle to give Oswego a 1-0 lead. Perno finished the first period with 13 saves and Schell had nine.

The Lakers wasted no time in the second period. Freshman forward Brock Krulicki (Wellesley, Ontario/Lloydminster Bobcats) tapped home a pass at the top of the crease 52 seconds in. Potsdam killed off a 5-on-3 situation moments later. At 9:48, graduate student defenseman Quinn Warmuth (Olmstead Fall, Ohio/Robert Morris) scored on a shot from the right point to make it 3-0. The teams traded three unsuccessful power plays each in the period and the score remained the same heading into the second intermission. Perno stopped another 13 shots during the stanza.

Oswego added its fourth goal at 10:11 of the third period. Sophomore forward Connor Gatto (Jacksonville, Fla./Shreveport Mudbugs) caught a pass at the blue line in stride, split the Bears defense and wristed the puck high into the net. The Bears were called for a five-minute cross checking penalty with 6:40 to go. The Lakers scored twice on the major. Senior forward Shane Bull (Brooklin, Ontario/Pickering Panthers) had each of the power-play markers. The first came at 13:55 and the second at 15:57.

Perno finished with 39 saves and Schell made 18 to earn the shutout. The Lakers were 2-for-7 on the man advantage and Potsdam was 0-for-4.

The Bears are back in action tomorrow night when they host SUNY Cortland at 7 p.m.
