Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Cortland blanks Bears

CORTLAND, N.Y.—SUNY Cortland (6-2, 4-2 SUNYAC) scored twice in the first period en route to a 4-0 victory over the SUNY Potsdam men's hockey team (1-9, 0-6 SUNYAC) on Saturday night at Maxcy Hall Ice Arena.

The game was fast and physical from the outset. Just 2:43 into the contest, Potsdam was called for interference. Just 59 seconds later, sophomore forward Colby Seitz (Eden, N.Y./Corpus Christi IceRays) fired from the high slot to make it 1-0. At 16:26, graduate student defenseman A.J. Przystawski (Burlington, Conn./New Hampshire Avalanche) scored to double the lead. Freshman goalie Lenny Perno (Rochester, N.Y./Richmond Generals) made 17 saves in first period to keep his team in the game.

Przystawski struck again five minutes into the second period. The rest of the stanza saw penalty after penalty. Cortland was sent to the box five times and Potsdam twice. The Bears moved the puck well on their four power plays, including a five-on-three opportunity, but were unable to score. Senior goalie Jack Riedell (Greensboro, N.C./Charlotte Rush) made 13 saves and had a little help from his posts. The Red Dragons were up 3-0 after 40 minutes.

Penalty trouble continued in the third period. After the Bears killed a hooking call, Cortland added a fourth goal. Senior forward Nate Berke (Williamsville, N.Y./Buffalo Jr. Sabres) knocked home a rebound at 5:33. Seven seconds later, Potsdam was whistled for an elbowing penalty, but the Bears penalty-kill unit handled this threat. The penalties kept coming for both teams, though the score didn't change again. Each team had five penalties in the third and four power plays.

Perno finished with 31 saves and Riedell earned the shutout with 33 stops. Cortland finished 1-for-7 on the man advantage and the Bears were 0-for-8.

The Bears are back in action on Friday, when they travel to Fredonia for a 7 p.m. SUNYAC contest.
