Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

Fast start leads Lakers past Potsdam, 3-1

POTSDAM, N.Y.—Oswego State (5-4-1, 2-2-1 SUNYAC) scored three times in the first period, including twice on the power play, to defeat the SUNY Potsdam women's hockey team (3-5, 1-4) 3-1 on Friday afternoon. Junior forward Sara Barrett (Tonawanda, N.Y./Niagara Jr. Purple Eagles) scored for the Bears.

The Lakers struck just two minutes into the contest. Senior forward Rachel Corbett (Rochester, N.Y./Buffalo Regals) tipped a shot from the left point between the pads of screened sophomore goalie Magalie Parent (Trois-Rivières, Quebec/Les Diablos – Cégep de Trois-Rivières) to make it 1-0. Potsdam took a hooking penalty 35 seconds later and Oswego took advantage. At 4:22, freshman forward Erika Parenti (Chateauguay, Quebec/Worcester Academy) redirected a shot into the right corner of the net and it was 2-0. Another penalty with 2:29 left, helped Oswego add another goal. Junior forward Ashlyn McGrath (Delmar, N.Y./Northwood School) knocked home a pass at the right post. The Lakers entered the first intermission up 3-0 and on their third power play of the contest.

The Bears killed the rest of the penalty to start the second period. The teams continued to trade penalties throughout the entire 20 minutes. The Lakers went on a 5-on-3 advantage with 4:45 left, but strong play from Parent and her defense kept the score the same. With 56 seconds left, Barrett's hustle forced a turnover in front of the net and she slid the puck under Oswego junior goalie Lexi Levy (St. Louis, Mo./Post University) to make it 3-1. Parent stopped all 12 shots she faced in the period.

The Bears outshot Oswego 10-4 in the third period, thanks in part to five power play opportunities. With just under four minutes to go, Potsdam went on a 5-on-3 chance of its own. However, Levy and the Lakers kept the Bears off the board the rest of the way.

Parent made 25 saves for Potsdam and Levy stopped 24 for Oswego. The Lakers finished 2-for-7 on the power play and the Bears were 0-for-7.

Potsdam is back action tomorrow at 3 p.m. when the Bears host Buffalo State in another SUNYAC matchup.
