Cortland downs Bears

CORTLAND, N.Y.—SUNY Cortland (4-2, 2-0 SUNYAC) defeated the SUNY Potsdam men's basketball team (1-6, 0-2) 81-63 on Saturday afternoon. Junior forward Parker Kelly (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Beekmantown) led the Bears with 18 points and junior guard Isaac Oduro Jr. (Jamaica, N.Y./Christ the King) had 17 points.
 
Potsdam and the Red Dragons traded leads through the first 11:09 of the contest. At 8:51, a free throw from junior guard MeSean Johnson (Ogdensburg, N.Y./Ogdensburg Free Academy) gave the Bears an 18-17 lead. Cortland answered with a run 12-0 run to take control. Junior guard Jeff Williamson (Brooklyn, N.Y./Christ the King) broke the drought with a 3-pointer at 4:15. The Red Dragons kept coming and a three from Pierre Hajjar gave the hosts a 37-25 advantage at 2:10. A Williamson layup and three from Oduro closed the gap to 38-30 at 1:28. Johnson scored on a layup with three seconds on the clock and Potsdam trailed 40-32 at the break.
 
Potsdam trailed 68-49 with 5:40 left in the second half, but a Kelly jumper ignited an 11-2 run. Kelly scored on a layup at 2:46 and the Bears were down just 70-60. The Red Dragons shook off the challenge and finished the contest with an 11-3 spurt.
 
Williamson had 10 points and four rebounds. Junior forward Shaheed Alcide (Queens, N.Y./Cambria Heights Academy) added seven points and five boards.
 
Kareem Lubin led Cortland with 19 points and 14 rebounds. Jaylen Warmack scored 14 points and Hajjar finished with 13. Aaron Coston rounded out the leaders with 11 points.
 
The Bears are back in action on Tuesday, when they travel to Division I University at Albany for a 7 p.m. contest with the Great Danes.
