CASTLETON, VT.—Tenth-ranked Colby College (5-1) scored three power-play goals to defeat the SUNY Potsdam women's hockey team (4-6) 4-1 in the first round of Castleton's Bagley Invitational. Graduate student forward
Megan Teachout (Auburn, N.Y./Oswego State) scored a power-play goal for the Bears and senior goalie
Ellie Zurfluh (Arvada, Colo./Team Colorado) made a season-high 37 saves.
The Mules outshot the Bears 14-7 in the opening period. Each team had an unsuccessful power play. Zurfluh and Colby goalie Paige Bolyard each stopped everything that came their way and the contest remained scoreless after 20 minutes.
The Bears and Colby each had two power plays in the second period, but neither team was able to take advantage of them. The Mules built up more pressure as the period progressed and broke through late. At 15:50, Breanna Studley final broke the stalemate. Colby led 1-0 after two periods. Zurfluh made another 13 stops in the middle stanza.
The Mules scored three times in the third period. After the Bears were whistled for too many players on the ice, Meg Rittenhouse netted a power-play goal at 2:59. Beth Sinson made it 3-0 at 10:39 while Colby was on another power play. Potsdam finally got on the board with the help of a power play at 14:52. Teachout closed the gap to 3-1 with an assist from sophomore defenseman
Victoria Proulx (Rockland, Ontario/Post University). At 17:56, Rittenhouse sealed the outcome with her second marker, also on the man advantage.
Bolyard finished with 12 saves to earn the win. The Mules were 3-for-6 on the power play and Potsdam finished 1-for-4.
The Bears will now face Rivier University in tomorrow's 1 p.m. consolation contest, to close out the semester.
