Lions escape Bears in NECC opener, 3-2

POTSDAM, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam men's volleyball team (9-11, 0-1 NECC) rallied for a 2-1 set advantage before falling to Eastern Nazarene College (11-9, 2-0 NECC) 3-2 in its New England Collegiate Conference opener. Graduate student outside hitter Joe Zimmerman (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) led the Bears with 13 kills and 11 digs. Freshman outside hitter Duncan Tenhagen (Buffalo, N.Y./West Seneca West) had 11 kills, 11 digs and three assists and sophomore middle hitter Matt Kilinski (Greenfield Center, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) added 10 kills and four blocks.
 
The Lions were impressive in set one taking a 25-15 win. Potsdam responded with a 25-20 victory in set two and ran away with set three with a 25-15 decision. Eastern Nazarene held off the Bears 25-22 in set four and pulled away 15-9 in set five. Graduate student setter Cooper Colesante (Central Square, N.Y./Paul V. Moore) had a match-high 44 assists along with four blocks and an ace. Senior opposite Zaire Rogers (Cheektowaga, N.Y./Cheektowaga) had 12 digs and an ace and junior middle hitter Sean Murray (Grand Island, N.Y./Grand Island) added four blocks.
 
Junior outside hitter Alejandro Garcia Fernandez (San Juan, P.R./Saint Francis School) paced the Lions with 23 kills, 10 digs and two aces. Senior outside hitter Delfy Soler (Lawrence, Mass./Lawrence) contributed 16 kills and an ace. Sophomore opposite Jacob Zarges (Quincy, Mass./Quincy) finished with 12 kills and three blocks. Junior setters Christopher Gil (Lawrence, Mass./Lawrence) and Aaron Huang (Quincy, Mass./North Quincy) had 29 and 27 assists, respectively. Graduate student defensive specialist Brandon Brown (Oxford, Pa./Oxford Area) had a match-best 14 digs, while Huang also had 10.
 
The Bears host a tri-match tomorrow. Potsdam faces Lesley University, another NECC opponent, at 11 a.m. and Wells College at 3 p.m. Wells and Lesley will face off in a neutral site match at 1 p.m.
