Bears rough up Spartans for third in a row, 19-4

POTSDAM, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam men's lacrosse team (3-1) scored the first 16 goals of the contest in a 19-4 victory over Castleton University (1-4) on Wednesday evening. Reigning SUNYAC Player of the Week, senior captain Peyton Walsh (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa), stayed hot with seven points on six goals and an assist. Senior attackman Noah Strader (Ogdensburg, N.Y./Ogdensburg Free Academy) had a career-high five points on four goals and an assist. Senior captain Ryan Spaman (Ogdensburg, N.Y./Ogdensburg Free Academy) (1-3-4) and sophomore attackman Owen Walsh (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa) each had four points, a personal-best for Spaman.
 
Potsdam scored seven times in the first quarter, including the first two from Peyton Walsh in the opening 4:18. Spaman, Owen Walsh, sophomore midfielder Ryan Hughes (Corning, N.Y./Corning-Painted Post), sophomore midfielder Drew Rose (Brasher Falls, N.Y./St. Lawrence Central), and junior attackman Cobie Cree (Akwesasne, N.Y./Salmon River) also scored to give Potsdam a 7-0 lead after 15 minutes. Spaman also had two assists in the quarter.
 
The Walsh brother scored all five goals in the second quarter. Peyton had three and Owen added two more. The Bears were up 12-0 at the break.
 
Senior midfielder Bryce Tyler (Camden, Maine/Camden Hills) opened the scoring at 13:16 of the third quarter. Payton Walsh followed with his sixth 46 seconds later. Strader netted the next two in a row, the second with a helper from Spaman, and Potsdam was up 16-0 at 8:36. Freshman midfielder Jordan Damske (Haverhill, Mass./Haverhill) finally got the Spartans on the board with 6:25 left in the third.
 
Castleton got the first two of the fourth quarter from freshman attackman Matt Gregoire (Hudson Falls, N.Y./Hudson Falls) and sophomore midfielder Ethan Esposito (Highland, N.Y./Highland) and it was 16-3 with 11:40 left. Freshman midfielder Tyler Gould (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) scored Potsdam's 17th goal of the game at 10:52 and Strader buried his third at 8:40. Senior attackman Sean Kimura (Montreal, Quebec/Hebron Academy) added the Spartans' fourth and final goal with 18 seconds left. Potsdam answered a final time with a lightning strike from Strader off a feed from freshman faceoff specialist Drew Costello (Ogdensburg, N.Y./Ogdensburg Free Academy) with six seconds on the clock.
 
Junior goalie Liam O'Neil (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) started for the Bears, but didn't face a shot on goal in the first 22:26. Junior Chris Wilk (Rutland, Vt./Rutland) was untested in the next 7:34. Freshman Saka Thompson (Akwesasne, N.Y./Salmon River) allowed a goal in the third quarter. Junior Collin Dougherty (East Greenbush, N.Y./Columbia) made four saves and allowed three goals in the fourth quarter.
 
Sophomore goalie Christopher Dindino (Turnsville, N.J./Peddie School) made 13 saves and allowed 14 goals for the Spartans in the opening 34:43. Freshman Conor McWeeny (Stowe, Vt./Stowe) stopped three shots and allowed three goals in the next 15:54. Sophomore Zac Smith (Arlington, Mass./Arlington Catholic) made two saves and allowed two goals in the final 9:23.
 
Costello was a perfect 14-for-14 in the faceoff circle. Fellow freshman Talon Thompson (Akwesasne, N.Y./Salmon River) was nearly as good, winning 10 of 12. Costello also had a contest-best eight ground balls and Strader finished with five. Sophomore defender Ben Welch (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas) caused three turnovers.
 
The Bears are back in action on Saturday, when they head to Morrisville State for a 1 p.m. showdown with the Mustangs.
