Walsh has career day in 14-12 win at Neumann

ASTON, PA.—The SUNY Potsdam men's lacrosse team (1-1) never trailed in a 14-12 victory at Neumann University (2-4) on Monday afternoon. Senior captain Peyton Walsh (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa) had a career-high eight points on six goals and two assists. Sophomore midfielder Drew Rose also had a career day with four points on two goals and two assists.
 
Potsdam opened the contest with four straight goals. Peyton Walsh made it 1-0 just 1:04 into the contest. At 12:04, sophomore attackman Owen Walsh (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa) made it 2-0 with a helper from Rose. Senior attackman Noah Strader (Ogdensburg, N.Y./Ogdensburg Free Academy) and Peyton Walsh completed the run with markers at 5:52 and 4:51. The Knights finally answered with two goals in seven seconds to cut the lead in half. Justice Brovero scored at 4:19 and Emmett Wexler struck at 4:12.
 
The Bears extended their lead in the second quarter, outscoring Neumann 5-3. Peyton Walsh completed his hat trick early with a man-up goal on an assist from Rose at 9:51. Dalton Hofmann and Wyatt Belotti sandwiched two goals around Bears senior captain Ryan Spaman's (Ogdensburg, N.Y./Ogdensburg Free Academy) tally at 8:06 and it was a 6-4 Potsdam advantage at 6:58. Peyton Walsh buried his fourth at 5:02 and then set up Spaman's second at 2:21 to make it 8-4. Mike Kiley countered with a goal at 1:46, but Rose notched his first just a second before the break and Potsdam took a 9-5 lead into the half.
 
Rose opened the third quarter scoring at 13:47 and Walsh added goals five and six at 10:19 and 5:33. Freshman midfielder Tyler Gould (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas) assisted on the latter. Hofmann and Wexler each added a goal to their totals at 12:12 and 6:33, but Potsdam led 12-7 after 45 minutes.
 
Owen Walsh scored his second of the day 1:06 into the final quarter. Wexler answered for Neumann 40 seconds later to start a 5-0 run. Max Nice scored a man-up goal at 8:28. Hofmann scored his third and fourth at 7:33 and 4:43. Kyle Daly scored at 3:45 and the Knights trailed just 13-12. Owen Walsh halted the streak at 3:37, causing a turnover and burying his third of the day to make it a two-goal game. Potsdam called timeout with a minute remaining. The Knights were called for two penalties as the clock ran out and the Bears closed out their first win of the season.
 
Junior goalie Liam O'Neil (Liverpool N.Y./Liverpool) had eight saves for his fifth career win. Jake Marchiafava stopped seven shots for the Knights. Potsdam was 1-for-5 in man-up situations and Neumann went 1-for-4.
 
Peyton Walsh also had five ground balls and three caused turnovers. Sophomore defender Ben Welch (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas) also had five ground balls and two caused turnovers. Sophomore long-stick midfielder Ben Lagoner (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas) also caused three turnovers. Freshman Drew Costello (Ogdensburg, N.Y./Ogdensburg Free Academy) won five faceoffs for the Bears.
 
Potsdam is back in action on Wednesday, when the Bears travel to Moravian University for a 1 p.m. showdown.
