Bears outpace Greyhounds, 15-9

BETHLEHEM, PA.—The SUNY Potsdam men's lacrosse team (2-1) led wire to wire to defeat Moravian University (2-3) 15-9 on Wednesday afternoon. Senior captain Peyton Walsh (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa) had another big day with five goals. Junior attackman Cobie Cree (Akwesasne, N.Y./Salmon River) scored four goals. Sophomore attackman Owen Walsh (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa) registered a goal and three assists and sophomore midfielder Drew Rose (Brasher Falls, N.Y./Brasher Falls) contributed three goals and an assist. Junior goalie Liam O'Neil (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) made 12 saves for his sixth career victory.

Potsdam scored three of the contest's first four goals. Peyton Walsh opened the scoring at 13:41 with an assist from sophomore midfielder Ryan Hughes (Corning, N.Y./Corning-Painted Post). Aaron Judge got the Greyhounds even 40 seconds later. Peyton Walsh and Cree then netted back-to-back goals at 12:24 and 9:27. Judge and Nick Sullivan answered in kind and the contest was 3-3 at 3:03. Hughes then set up Rose with 50 seconds left in the first quarter and the Bears led the rest of the way.

Rose set up Peyton Walsh for a man-up tally at 11:31 of the second. Vincent Devito countered with a Moravian man-up goal 20 seconds later. At 9:31, freshman midfielder Tyler Gould (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) ignited a 5-0 Bears run with his first collegiate goal. Peyton Walsh scored a man-up goal at 4:19. Cree followed with a helper from Owen Walsh at 3:23 and Potsdam was up 8-4 at the break.

Peyton Walsh opened the third quarter scoring with his fifth and final goal of the day at 13:43. Owen Walsh then set up Hughes at 11:19 to make it 10-4 and end the run. Judge scored his third at 8:46 and Rose struck again with 16 seconds left and the Bears were up 11-5 after 45 minutes.

Judge scored his fourth 34 seconds into the final quarter, but Rose answered less than a minute later. The teams split the last six goals. Ryan Kokoszka scored at 11:32, but Cree buried his fourth at 9:43 with an assist from senior captain Ayden LaFave (Philadelphia, N.Y./Indian River). Back-to-back man-up markers from Devito and Brennan Fluehr gave Moravian some late hope, closing the gap to 13-9 at 5:44. However, Owen Walsh scored his own man-up goal at 2:33 and then set up Cree for the game's final goal with 38 seconds.

Thomas Lee made 12 stops for the Greyhounds.

Freshmen faceoff specialists Drew Costello (Ogdensburg, N.Y./Ogdensburg Free Academy) and Talon Thompson (Akwesasne, N.Y./Salmon River) won eight and six faceoffs, respectively.
